On New Hampshire’s Seacoast, several towns have been part of well-known PFAS concern areas. The former Pease site is located in parts of Portsmouth, Newington, and Greenland, while the Coakley Landfill site is located in North Hampton and Greenland and borders Rye.
That does not mean every home in these towns has unsafe water. It does mean homeowners in these areas should take water quality seriously, especially if they use a private well and have never had it tested. NHDES continues to track PFAS occurrence at both the Pease and Coakley areas.
If you live in Portsmouth, Newington, Greenland, Rye, or North Hampton, water testing is a smart first step. Knowing what’s in your water helps you choose the right treatment, whether that means carbon filtration, reverse osmosis, or another targeted solution.
